Auto Glass in Vehicles

The different types of auto glass found in an automobile include the windshield, back glass, side glass, vent glass, slider glass, sunroof glass, and side mirror glass. By understanding the purpose of each type of glass, we can appreciate the importance of these components in ensuring the safety of the driver and passengers in the vehicle.

The Purpose of Auto Glass

Auto glass has not always been “shatter proof”. In fact, before the 1900’s drivers that got in accidents were getting sever injuries and even reported deaths. Recognizing this, in 1937 the US federal government stepped in to enforce the use of laminated glass in automobiles (check out this US tariff commission report talking about it.

In 1903, laminated glass was invented by French chemist Edouard Benedictus. This ingenious innovation consists of two layers of glass with a layer of polyvinyl butyral in between, ensuring that even if shattered, the glass remains intact.

Auto Glass Provides Visibility: Imagine driving without side mirrors or side door glass. Impossible. You need to use your peripheral vision to change lanes, etc. With ADAS enhanced safety measures are already integrated in most vehicles.

Auto Glass Provides Vehicle Structural Integrity: It is important to understand how windshields are made. There is OEM and OEE auto glass and the two are made the same but from different manufacturers. If you are ever in an accident and the vehicle flips over, cheap windshield glass (usually made from China) tends to collapse. Made in USA glass is stronger and made to last (less chipping and cracking).

Auto Glass Protects: Living in Arizona, flying rock and debris are always a problem. If we didn’t have auto glass protecting us, we wouldn’t be very safe.

Different types of Auto Glass

Windshield is perhaps the most crucial piece of glass in an automobile, as it plays a vital role in providing visibility and protecting the occupants from external elements such as rocks, debris, wind, rain, dust, etc. The windshield is made with laminated glass. This construction ensures that the glass does not shatter upon impact, reducing the risk of injury to the occupants.

Back Glass, also known as the rear windshield, serves a similar purpose to the front windshield. It is typically made from tempered glass, which is designed to shatter into small, dull pieces upon impact, reducing the risk of injury. The back glass provides visibility to the rear of the vehicle, allowing the driver to monitor traffic and maneuver safely. Its shape and design help reduce drag, improving fuel efficiency and overall performance.

Side Glass referring to the windows located on the sides of the vehicle, including the front side windows and rear side windows. These windows are typically made from tempered glass, like the back glass, to ensure safety in the event of an accident. The side glass provides visibility to the sides of the vehicle, allowing the driver to check blind spots and safely change lanes. It can be tinted to enhance privacy and reduce the amount of sunlight entering the cabin, providing a more comfortable driving experience. Moreover, the side glass helps insulate the cabin, reducing noise and maintaining a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle.

Vent Glass, also known as quarter glass, is a small triangular window located near the front doors of some vehicles. It is typically made from tempered glass and can be opened or closed to allow airflow into the cabin. The primary purpose of vent glass is to provide ventilation, especially during hot weather, without compromising the security of the vehicle.

Slider Glass, as the name suggests, refers to the windows that can be slid open or closed. These windows are commonly found in the rear doors of vehicles, allowing passengers to control the amount of airflow into the cabin. Slider glass is typically made from tempered glass to ensure safety and prevent shattering upon impact.

Sunroof Glass is a transparent or translucent panel located on the roof of a vehicle, allowing natural light and fresh air to enter the cabin. It can be either fixed or operable, providing the option to open or close the sunroof as desired. Sunroof glass is typically made from tempered glass or laminated glass, depending on the design and functionality of the sunroof. A sunroof also provides a sense of openness. It allows the driver and passengers of the vehicle to enjoy the benefits of natural light and fresh air, creating a more enjoyable and comfortable environment inside the vehicle.

Side Mirror Glass, also known as wing mirror glass or rearview mirror glass, is an essential component of an automobile’s exterior. It is typically made from flat glass or convex glass, depending on the design and purpose of the side mirror. The primary purpose of side mirror glass is to provide visibility to the sides and rear of the vehicle, allowing the driver to monitor traffic and maneuver safely.

Chip Repair, involves RW Auto Glass using a specialized resin to restore your vehicle’s windshield integrity. The damaged area is cleaned to remove debris and moisture. Then, a vacuum is applied to remove air from the chip, creating a stable environment. Next, a high-quality resin is injected into the void, filling the space and bonding with the glass. This resin, often composed of acrylic compounds, undergoes a curing process, solidifying under UV light. As a result, the repaired windshield becomes structurally sound, preventing further damage and ensuring your safety on the road.
