A TESLA © Brand Car is as beautiful as it is innovative. However, the beauty of a Tesla © car is ruined when you get an unsightly crack or chip in the windshield or the many other glass surfaces. A small or big crack both will send car owners into a panic wondering if the chip can be repaired or if they have to start thinking about a windshield and glass replacement. But a Tesla car is not like other cars… can you repair the glass on a tesla car? What are my options?
Can you repair Glass on a Tesla Vehicle?
Yes, glass can be repaired on a Tesla vehicle, just like any other vehicle. The key is whether or not the damage is severe enough to necessitate a full replacement, or if the damage occurred in an area that requires a full replacement. All windshields have areas on them that cannot sustain even the slightest crack or damage. If any bit of damage occurs in these areas, repair is not possible and only a full replacement is an option.
Areas of a Tesla Windshield That Cannot Be Repaired
In the image above, you can see there are parts of the main windshield of the tesla car that are marked in red. These areas cannot be repaired, and if you have damage in these red areas, the full window must be replaced. These areas of the windshield include the “Frit” area (the area along the outer edges of the windshield), the camera FOV area (Field of View), and the passenger side of the windshield.
Why Does a Crack on the Passenger Side of a Tesla Windshield Require a Full Replacement?
In a Tesla vehicle, the front passenger airbag relies on the windshield itself for proper positioning. Any repairs may offset this and affect the positioning of the airbag during deployment; therefore, repairs are not allowed to an existing windshield on the passenger side of a Tesla windshield.
If The Inner Layer of Windshield Glass is Damaged, It Requires Full Replacement
This is not unique to Tesla brand vehicles; if the inner layer of windshield glass is damaged on any make and model of vehicle it must be replaced and not repaired. The reason for this is that the seal of the glass has been broken and is no longer considered “sound,” structurally-speaking. This also goes for any other glass surface on a Tesla or other manufacturer of vehicles.
Chips and Cracks Longer Than 50MM
Any crack or chip that is longer / wider than 50 millimeters in length (1.9685 Inches) shown in the green area of the images above is unrepairable and will necessitate a full Windshield Replacement. Any crack or chip that is longer / wider than 25 millimeters in length (0.984252 Inches) shown in the blue area of the images above is unrepairable and will necessitate a full Windshield Replacement.
No More Than 3 Repairs Per Windshield
A total number of 3 allowable repairs are permitted for each windshield on American Vehicles. 4 or more issues requiring repair will always necessitate a full windshield replacement – regardless of make/manufacturer or any other factors.
